The History

In September of 1791, the Dunkeld sailed from Scotland carrying passengers from the Hebrides (archipelago off the northwest coast of Scotland), landing in Pictou.

Among the passengers were Angus MacDonald, John Pherson (veteran of Battle of Culloden, 1745), and Father James MacDonald.

The majority of passengers were destitute when they arrived in Nova Scotia, and the people of Pictou called on their local government to provide them with a means of living. Lieutenant Governor John Parr assisted the new immigrants throughout the winter.

After the winter had ended, the immigrants mostly settled into the areas of Antigonish and Cape Breton. A large portion of this group were able to acquire land and prospered.
